Apple cider vinegar has long been considered an at-home remedy for many, used to treat problems ranging from a sore throat to acne, but why? Why do so many people flock to use apple cider vinegar? We’ve rounded up the top 10 benefits of using this powerful vinegar and why you should add it to your next grocery list.

  • Weight loss: Yes, apple cider vinegar may help in the weight-loss process. A miraculous vinegar, right? Drinking apple cider can make you feel more full, preventing you from overeating throughout your day. This is because acetic acid, shown in the vinegar, has been shown to slow fat accumulation.

  • Could Lower Cholesterol: High cholesterol can lead to heart disease, something no one wants. Many believe acetic acid in ACV may work to lower your cholesterol, something that will help your overall health and well-being.

  • Acne: People aren’t just ingesting ACV, they’re putting it on their skin and in some cases even adding some into their bathtubs.  This is because the organic acids in it may help kill some of the bacteria that could be causing your acne. Also, because it is acidic, it may remove some of your dead skin cells and unclog some of your pores. ACV may be worth a shot if you haven’t tried it.

  • Deodorizes the body: Apple cider vinegar can help fight many forms of bacteria, including the odor bacteria. You can apply a little but under your arms. Many people also ACV for bad breath, opting to use it in the form of a mouth wash.

  • Fights diabetes and lowers blood sugar: Vinegar can improve insulin sensitivity during the high-carb meal and drastically lower blood glucose and insulin responses. This can help keep you heart-healthy.

  • Helps clear up mucus: If you have a stuffy nose, ACV may help cure it. Apple cider vinegar breaks up mucus in your body. It contains potassium, which thins mucus, and acetic acid, which has antibacterial properties to help with infections. Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink to aid in sinus drainage.

  • Soothes Sunburns: If you’ve spent too much time in the sun, ACV is a great natural remedy for soothing sunburn, irritated skin.  You can add a cup of ACV plus 1/4 cup coconut oil and some lavender oils in a room-temperature bath to help soothe your pain.
